Engelse Drop or better known as liquorice allsorts in its country of origin.

The delicious and colourful sugar, coconut and aniseed sweets that have been in the English (colonies) hearts and minds since 1899. There is also a very sweet symmetry between the painting and the start of its production process (1988) in Shieffeld England.

This piece has six enlarged pieces of liquorice allsorts against a blue background. The pink sweet in roughly the middle of the painting first catches the eye, before one becomes aware of the yellow and orange. The seemingly carelessly fallen pieces of sweets has a very energetic een sugar sweet vibration. The blue in the background and blue sweet in the foreground brings some ptranquility to the excitement of the enlarged, carelessly stacked sweet treats.

Van den Burgh manages to capture the pure delight, playfulness and sugary sweetness of the sweets in a and dynamic painting. The use of the bright, yet pastel colours sparks joy and adds a playful accent to any space it enters.
