1. Please tell us something about yourself Maartje.

I am Maartje Kramer, 24 years old and on my way to become a Heritage Professional. Besides a passion for history and art, I also enjoy belly dancing in my spare time. I also like to cook in the kitchen at home and I can be found dressed up at fantasy festivals!

----

2. How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey?

Through my current education in Cultural Heritage at the Reinwardt Academy. In the first and second years of my education, I could be found in a different museum/gallery every week. Now and then I posted something on Instagram and received positive feedback from my environment. So I started posting more and more about culture, art, history and a bit about myself. Eventually, I was invited by the museums themselves and that's how the ball started rolling!

---

3. Who are your role models?

Paintandcotton (unfortunately they are no longer active); During the early period of my account I looked up at their account.

Noortje.laan has the whole vintage vibe and fantastic historical outfits! I think it is so cool that she just wears what makes her happy.

Goeieouwekoeien;  this smooth girl duo who posts clear substantive texts and their passion for history radiates from it!

I don't really have role models in real life. I try to live as much as possible that makes me happy.

---

      4. What inspires you?

"Small" artists. This is a group with a huge passion for art, who are constantly devising new concepts. I like their innovative perspective and their art. I like to talk and visit with small artists. In the future, I want to show more of this group on my account.

Tascha: "Small" artists, refer to the artist that are not household names. The "great" artists from history that we know. Another term people use are "emerging" artists. Both problematic terms in their own right, but we currently lack a neutral vocabulary in the arts about artists and how well known their art and persons are. Yet, there is a huge difference between artists and how we as a society interact with them and their art. "Small" is not derogatory in any way.

      ---

Original Answer in Dutch: "Klein" kunstenaars.

      5. Please tell us about "Kunstmaartje" concept.

Hmmm... I wouldn't call myself a concept. What I think (and hope) that what I write, is accessible and easy for people to step into. I lower the threshold to visit a museum because people already have some knowledge about the content of the exhibition. I hope to enthuse people about art and history, by making it as clear as possible and showing how much fun and educational it can be!
Also, I hope to give a stage to "small" artists, so that people are inspired to buy art for the home! "

      ---

Tascha: I have never seen this painting before. And I love it! The painting and Maartje's captions and the comments below. Make it a lively painting I will remember and enjoy when I find it myself once everything is open again.

      "On the job"

      6. What's your most memorable experience?

I was asked to write the exhibition texts for Seeyouatart Amsterdam last year. I thought it was such a cool job! Because of this, I met a lot of artists and I was inspired by him to post more on my account! Unfortunately, the new exhibitions will not take place this year, although I hope to be able to write texts for the October exhibition!

Tascha: See you @ art, Amsterdam is a non-profit organisation that organizes events in the De Hallenan old tram station that has been THE place in Amsterdam for art, fashion and culture, these last 115 years.

      ---

      7. What's your greatest fear?

Becoming unhappy, which may sound a bit lame. But that is the only thing that I fear. Because being intensely unhappy does strange things to people, things that make me anxious.

      8. Looking back, what's one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?

Do not allow yourself to be influenced by other art Instagrammers / influencers. It created uncertainty a, bout my content and what I posted. I deleted or modified some things because someone commented on it. For example, that, according to that person, it was not real art and that my account did not look professional enough. In retrospect I thought; "Yes, but hello this is my account! I decide on my own place". It was only, in the beginning, are you so insecure and trying do the best I could. Now, I know I just have to do my own thing and listen to what makes me happy.

      ---

      9. What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

I use an Instagram planner app to see your feed in advance. This provides a huge overview of what you want to post and in which order.
My network, via- via I receive invitations. Sometimes it also works to take initiatives yourself and to contact cultural institutions.
Also, I think it is important that what you place remains accessible and manageable. No difficult words or miserably long explanations.

      ---

      10. What keeps you going when things get tough?

My boyfriend, he is my rock. I also get a lot of strength and support from my belly dance group Kismet bellydance. Dancing with the girls is something that makes me happy. During the corona crisis, this is a part of my life that I miss very much.

      ---

      11. What is the one thing you wish people knew more about art?

That you don't need a higher education to understand art!

      ---

Art Influencer in the early 21st Century

Maartje Kramer's account grew from following her journey into the art world when she started her formal education into cultural heritage. She is still finishing up her formal education.
In the twenty-first century, much of our public, private and professional worlds intersect in public spaces like Instagram. Sharing your passions, ideas and life from the safety of your home. She shares the fun parts of the art world, as well as demanding accountability of those that make it unsafe. Maartje publicly outed and deconstructed misogynistic attack on her profile. I am very proud of the actions she took. She is a very inspiring guide into the art world, that has taken her followers hand and taken them on her ride through Dutch art. She is funny, transparent, courageous and disarmingly charming.

Thank you for taking the time to take this interview with us Maartje. :)
