Description of "Tweestrijd" by Art Historian Paulina Capilla.

Tweestrijd is a figurative painting with two seated figures at a high table. Behind them is a partition, similar to a painted partition in the artist's studio. The dividing wall is a blue triple display board with various drawings and symbols of people, dogs and fish in front of a brick red wall. The figure on the left is a little girl with short black hair, she sits behind the table with a smiling doll on her left knee. She uses her right hand to place the doll's hand on the table. To the right, a woman stares into the distance. She appears to be hugging a tall bowl filled with a red liquid, perhaps a warm cup of tomato soup. Both figures are separate from each other.

While the blue of the dividing wall emphasizes the two people at the table, the bright cream tabletop matches the pale color of their faces. It draws attention to this part of the painting.

The artist uses color here to indicate the points of interest in the work. She provides a backdrop of warm, neutrals with the brick red wall and olive green floor, then used the blue of folded board to center the foreground. Finally, the two figures are accentuated by the bold use of black in their clothing, against the brightness of the tabletop, matching their skin tone.

This example of a candid depiction of everyday life can be traced back to 19th-century artists who wanted to capture an accurate depiction of the world, a movement known as realism. While realism is a genre all its own, this idea that everyday moments were worthy of representation has taken over the art world and continues to inspire artists to this day.

This calm moment over a simple meal is sure to inspire quiet reflection in any setting. It will encourage viewers to reflect on their own everyday moments worth remembering.
