The description is written by curator Emi Eleode for the exhibition: Humans in their most Vulnerable Form.

Three faces conjoined as one; each with a different disposition. A detached, nonchalant expression is the primary image our eyes are immediately drawn to as it is the centre of the subject’s face. The different shades of brown paint highlight the wrinkles on her forehead, bags under the eyes and deep-set smile-lines. A face that shows the various spectrum of human emotions such as happiness (smile lines), to stress (forehead wrinkles). The first face. From the left is one of contentment and satisfaction. It has an optimistic facial appearance. Her eye is shut, dreaming away peacefully with a smile on her face. The worries of the world being far away from her subconscious. The third face has a similar expression to the middle one but more sombre in look. The darker brown tone of her under-eye and nose added to the tired demeanour like she was suppressing something.

What’s interesting about this painting is how the portrait depicts a tree. The elongated neck inside an orangey-brown turtleneck represents the trunk of a tree. The green and white roots sprout out from the ground, weaving around the trunk while the leaves are swaying against the brown background. Her afro hair glorious and encircled with a sky blue, black and orange halo, standing tall against the earth’s atmosphere.

Even though the three expressions on the subject’s face represent different emotions and feelings, this painting has a wholesome and earthly feel to it. It’s intrinsically grounded in our relationship to mother nature and our need for familiarity amidst the changes in our daily lives.

Like many of Fiona’s paintings, the subject's appearance has a duality to them. Even though the main impression we might get from a particular portrait is one of say anxiousness or worry, when we look deeper into them, there’s more than meets the eye. An inner world full of different emotions, shown through their eyes.
