Desert is a large figurative oil painting of a woman and other city dwellers living in a cityscape by the contemporary Dutch painter and Poet Marko Klomp. The almost white road is the star of the painting dominating the canvas. But humans will always search for the known, focuses on the figure with long hair off centre on the top half of the canvas.

Marko paints in a distinctive "soft focus" style. Also known as sfumato. The image is built up of layers and layers of thin oil paints that create the hazy effect. Like you are looking at the image through the unfocused lens of a camera.

As one tries to get closer to the painting to see the detail, the woman and the rest of the street scene dissolves into an abstract plane of colours. Only then does one realise that the woman was never the subject of the painting but the street she is walking in. The painting never gives clarity, but rather allows for the subjectivity of interpretation.

Marko has been perfecting his style for decades since graduating from the prestigious St Joost art School in Breda, The Netherlands.
