Mirror Memories II | Adéle du Plessis | Abstract Painting

After much deliberation (almost 3 years) Adéle has decided to call her paintings with silver: Mirrors of Versaille Series.

This is a painting that explores the materiality of layers of paint in a painting. Adéle painted multiple layers of colour over a heavily textured background. It is extremely labour intensive and is made out of hundreds on hundreds of layers of coloured paint.

The top layer of the painting was painted silver. As the final step of the process, the finished painting was sanded with a sand grinder. The heavily textured base layer of the painting allows the bigger part of the painting to exist still while exposing the layers of paint underneath. Which refers back to the artistic movement of Spatialism. Where the material that makes the painting is highlighted and not a subject or object in the painting.

The silver paint darkens with age. At first, the silver reflects the sun back almost as a sheen of white and darkens to a darker patina of grey with time. These paintings from the series reflect the light in delightfully changing and playful ways.
